David Hawkins, a beloved figure in the golfing community and a pioneer in mental health advocacy, has passed away at the age of 71. His sudden death on July 21st has left a profound impact on those who knew him, both within and outside the sport.
Hawkins' dedication to golf and his community is exemplified by his long-standing involvement with Royal Mail, where he served as Head of Contract Operations, overseeing the efficient movement of millions of postal items daily. However, his greatest passion lay in the sport he loved, and he dedicated much of his time and energy to improving the lives of others.
As a resident of Leighton Buzzard and a former captain of Millbrook Golf Club, Hawkins became a driving force in the local golfing community. His leadership and commitment to the sport led him to take on the role of club captain at Leighton Buzzard Golf Club in 2011 and president from 2013 to 2014. Beyond his role as a club official, Hawkins was a dedicated volunteer and administrator, serving as president, secretary, and chief executive officer of Bedfordshire County Golf Limited. His efforts earned him the respect of clubs throughout the county, and Bedfordshire was named England Golf County Of The Year in 2023.
Hawkins' most significant contribution, however, was his advocacy for mental health awareness. Together with colleagues Steve Whitney, Dave McGarry, and Graham Freer, he founded the Fore Your Mind initiative, a mental health awareness program based in Leighton Buzzard. This initiative received national recognition in the 2026 England Golf Awards for its groundbreaking work in promoting mental health awareness across the golfing community.
Hawkins' personal struggles with the loss of his son, Paul, who passed away from heart-related issues a decade ago, fueled his passion for helping others. He became a life coach at Reclaim Life, a mental health and wellbeing charity, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to supporting those in need. His efforts extended beyond the golf course, as he was a long-term supporter of Liverpool Football Club and actively worked with colleagues at other Bedfordshire clubs and England Golf to launch Your Mind with Mind Mental Health First Aid England.
Hawkins' impact on the golfing community and his dedication to improving the lives of others will be remembered and celebrated. His legacy will live on through the continued efforts of Fore Your Mind and the many lives he touched. The service at Bedford Crematorium on August 27th, followed by a wake at Leighton Buzzard Golf Club, will serve as a testament to the love and respect he received from his family, friends, and the golfing community.
